N.L. Health Services changing masking requirements next Monday

Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services is making changes to its masking requirements at health-care facilities across the province, effective April 28, 2025. 

The public is reminded that self-screening for COVID-19/respiratory illness remains in effect, and visitors/support persons should not visit a health-care facility if they feel ill or are experiencing COVID-19, flu-like or gastrointestinal symptoms. 

Updated masking guidelines (effective April 28, 2025)  

  • Masking will no longer be required for visitors/support persons, clients, and patients, pending they meet the self-screening requirements, in clinical areas in health-care facilities (including waiting areas for health-care services/appointments, clinical care/treatment areas, and while visiting patients and long-term care residents).  
  • If a facility experiences an outbreak, additional masking protocols may be implemented; visitors or support persons should check with the care team for the required personal protective equipment.   
  • Reminder: Individuals seeking or receiving health-care services who are symptomatic (i.e. experiencing any one or more symptoms of COVID-19 or respiratory symptoms) or who have a rash are required to wear a mask upon entry and at all times while inside a health-care facility. Visitors/support persons who are feeling unwell or sick should not visit patients/residents or accompany others to appointments.  
  • Masks will continue to be available at health-care facilities across the province. Individuals who would like to continue wearing masks are encouraged to do so.  
  • Individuals can wear their medical mask, or a mask provided at the health-care facility.  
  • Visitors and support persons are also asked to consider the safety of those they are visiting. It can be especially important to wear a mask if you are around others who are at risk of more severe disease and outcomes, including those with chronic conditions, compromised immune systems, and older adults or young children.   

Current masking requirements

  • Masks will continue to be required until April 28 in clinical areas and apply to visitors/support persons, clients, patients (in outpatient clinics and emergency departments) and health-care workers.

Self-screening for COVID-19/respiratory illness  

  • Visitors/support persons are directed to follow signage at health-care facilities and meet the self-screening requirements before proceeding inside the health-care facility. In addition, visitors/support persons can complete self-screening before arrival at the facility by visiting https://nlhealthservices.ca/key-information/masking-and-self-screening.

Tentative agreement reached at The Gathering Place

Workers at The Gathering Place have reached their first-ever tentative agreement. The union, CUPE local 54-78 says after almost a year and a half of negotiating, workers reached a tentative agreement with their employer today.

Workers at The Gathering Place unionized in October 2023. Details of the agreement are not being shared until members have the opportunity to review and ratify the terms, which will take place soon.

Province awards contract for repair work for province’s fifth water bomber

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure has awarded a contract valued at $14.8 million to De Havilland Aircraft of Canada for the repair work for the province’s fifth CL-415 water bomber. 

In a news release the province says the water bomber will support the efforts of the Provincial Government’s well-trained and high-quality fire suppression team that has guided communities through forest fires that are becoming increasingly challenging and more frequent due to climate change.

But Opposition parties are weighing in, and criticizing just how long it’s taken to begin work to get the provinces fifth water bomber back up and running.

“The Liberal government has left the province without a fifth water bomber for seven years. The Liberals have failed to take action to fix this aircraft and now the province is facing another fire season without adequate resources,” said PC MHA Pleaman Forsey.

NDP MHA for Labrador West Jordan Brown has long been calling for the return of the water bomber and the reestablishment of the Wabush base.

Memorial mass to honour life of Pope Francis Thursday night at Basilica in St. John’s

Long lines of mourners have formed to pay their final respects to Pope Francis outside St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City.

Here in the capital city, there will be a memorial mass at the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist tomorrow night.

Pope Francis will now lie in state at St. Peter’s Basilica, where the public will be able to pay their respects to him, ahead of Saturday’s funeral. There will be a memorial mass in commemoration of Pope Francis Thursday night, at 7pm, at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist in the capital city. All are invited to attend and a book of Condolence is available for signing.

Province to provides increased mileage assistance Rate for Medical Transportation Assistance Program

Minister of Labrador Affairs Lisa Dempster has highlighted changes to the mileage assistance rate for the Medical Transportation Assistance Program.

Patients who travel more than 500 kilometres a year to access specialized medical care under the Medical Transportation Assistance Program are now entitled to a $0.25 per kilometre rate for private vehicle travel, a five-cent increase from the $0.20 rate. The 500-kilometre annual deductible period runs from April 1 to March 31. This new mileage rate is available for eligible kilometres driven on or after April 1.

Over 20,000 trips, or seven million kilometres, have been covered through the Medical Transportation Assistance Program during the 2024-2025 fiscal year.

Nominations accepting Inductees into the Royal St. John’s Regatta Hall of Fame

Nominations for 2025 Inductees into the Royal St. John’s Regatta Hall of Fame are now being accepted.

The objectives of the Hall of Fame are to recognize, honour, and pay tribute to individuals or crews on the basis of ability, sportsmanship, character, achievement, or extraordinary distinction in fixed-seat rowing, whether amateur or professional. To recognize, honour and pay tribute to those individuals, groups or associations who have given distinguished service and who have made a major contribution to the development and advancement of fixed seat rowing in Newfoundland; and, to encourage the development of all aspects of fixed seat rowing by permanently recording the achievements and history of such individuals, groups, associations, or crews.

Nominations are open for a rower or crew, coach or coxswain, and builder.

The deadline for nomination is June 11, inductees will be informed of the selection on July 9, and the Hall of Fame Ceremony will be on July 24.

Man arrested after youth shows up at Janeway with serious injuries

Just before 11:00 p.m. last night the RNC responded to a call for assistance to the Janeway Hospital in St John’s.

A female youth had showed up with serious injuries including puncture wounds to her body.

After conducting an investigation, a 19-year-old male was arrested in CBS and taken to the lockup.

The male is facing several charges including assault causing bodily harm.

A good drive across the province this morning

Roads are bare across the province with a few wet and icy sections.

The MV Marine Trader is in service but off schedule. Other ferries are on time.

At the St. John’s International Airport, Air Canada flights 2250 and 687 are delayed and POrter flights 230 and 2280 are delayed. In Gander, Sunwing Flight 4354 are delayed and in Deer Lake, Air Canada Flight 7719 is delayed.

RNC searching for missing person

The RNC are searching for a missing man who was last heard from on April 15.

Walter Barrett is believed to be possibly in the Bay Roberts area and may have his dog, Izzy, an older grey and white sheep dog with him.

He is believed to be driving a white Honda Odyssey, NL licence plate JRJ-365. There are concerns for his mental health and well-being.

St. John’s seeks feedback on University Area and Cowan Heights neighbourhood plan

The City of St. John’s is inviting residents and businesses to provide feedback on the initial recommendations for new neighbourhood plans for the University Area and Cowan Heights.

Initial recommendations address the mix of land uses, height and density of development, transportation, open spaces, and protection of natural and cultural heritage features.

The opportunity is open to all residents and businesses, with a focus on those living and working in the University Area and Cowan Heights.
