Police in Labrador City arrest impaired driver

Police in Labrador City arrested a man for impaired driving following a tip from the public. On Saturday, just before 1:15 a.m., police received a call describing a near-miss in the area of Bartlett Drive in Labrador City. Officers located a vehicle matching the description nearby on the Trans Labrador Highway. The male operator failed the breathalyzer and was founded to be driving over twice the legal limit.

The 42-year-old was charged with impaired driving and had his vehicle impounded. He was released to appear in court at a later date.

Monday sees less rain across the Island after soggy weekend for many

Many areas of the Island saw another exceptionally soggy weekend, leading to some all-time November rainfall records being broken. St. John’s was one of those areas where the record fell early Sunday morning.

Since then, we have certainly added to the total and the difference is more stark. It should be noted that the record I’m mentioning here is for the airport location of climatic data records, which goes as far back as 1942. There is data that goes back to the late 1800s in the St. Johns area, and if we include that we are encroaching on all-time monthly rainfall record.

Bonavista is another location that has shattered it’s records for rainfall for the month of November… and ever! Justin Beaudreau (Meteorologist with ECCC NL) tweeted this over the weekend, and it helps to put into perspective just how rainy it’s been this month in that location.

Today the weather across NL will be on the drier side of things, but not completely dry… especially on the Northern Peninsula. Here is what we can expect today, per region.

  • Eastern Newfoundland
    • Partly to mostly cloudy this morning, becoming cloudy in the afternoon. There will be areas of showers and/or drizzle and patches of fog. Highs reach the upper single digits and wind speeds will be light under an area of low pressure.
  • Central Newfoundland
    • Cloudy to mostly cloudy. The day will be dry from Grand Falls-Windsor points east. West of Grand Falls-Windsor there will be showers and light rain through much of the day. Highs in the mid single digits.
  • Green Bay – White Bay
    • Periods of rain. Heavy at times.
  • The Northern Peninsula
    • Periods of rain that will be heavy at times. It will also be windy in this area with steady easterlies. Winds along the coast will be sustained at 45 to 60 km/h. The rain will start to end from north to south later in the day. Highs will be in the lower to mid-single digits.
  • The West Coast
    • Periods of rain and/or showers. The showers will be less prevalent along the Gulf and more prevalent inalnd over higher terrain. It will be breezy. Highs in the mid single digits.
  • The South Coast
    • Partly to mostly cloudy with highs near 7.
  • Labrador
    • Generally cloudy with areas of rain and/or snow near the Straits. Along the coast there will be rain, but inland over higher terrain there will be snow. Highs in Goose Bay to Cartwright points south will be near 2. Farther north and int he west highs will be near 0 or a bit below.

RCMP to hosts Change of Command Ceremony Tuesday

As of tomorrow, the province will have a new top RCMP officer.

There will be a Change of Command Ceremony, officially marking the new leadership of officers in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The ceremony takes place at 2:00 p.m. at RCMP Headquarters at East White Hills Road in St. John’s.

Purple Ribbon Flag Raising to be Held at Confederation Building 

Minister Responsible for Women and Gender Equality Pam Parsons will host a flag raising and proclamation signing event to mark the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence, also known as the Purple Ribbon Campaign today.

The event takes at 11:00 a.m. in the main lobby of the Confederation Building.

The event is open to the public and attendees are encouraged to bring brightly coloured flowers in memory of those who have lost their lives or who have been impacted by gender-based violence.    

Government Adding Two New PET-CT Scanners to Two Hospitals

The Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s and the Western Memorial Regional Hospital in Corner Brook will receive a new PET-CT scanner.

The new scanners will reduce wait times for all residents who require a PET-CT scan and will result in people receiving improved patient outcomes.

Adding a second PET-CT scanner to the Health Sciences Centre will help NL Health Services meet the requirements to continue producing radiotracers in the province for PET-CT scanners in St. John’s and Corner Brook.

Stoodley to Announce Employment and Training Funding for Refugee Women

Today Minister of Immigration, Population Growth and Skills Sarah Stoodley will announce funding for a new program to empower refugee women.

The event will take place at Newbornlander in St. John’s at 1:30 p.m.

Stoodley will be joined by Newbornlander owner Constanza Safatle Ferrari and Mark Lane with the Northpine Foundation.

Wet road across the Island this morning

Roads across the Island are bare and wet with fair to good visibility. In Labrador, roads are partly snow-covered with icy and slushy patches and fair visibility.

The MV Flanders will take fuel in Portugal Cove this morning so the 9:30 a.m. departure will be delayed. The MV Kamutik will be load and go southbound and is expected to arrive in Hopedale at 8:30 a.m. The MV Qajaq W is out of service.

At the St. John’s International Airport, Porter Flight 2280 is cancelled and Air Canada Flight 2253 is delayed. There are no delays or cancellations in Gander or Deer Lake.

Happy Valley-Goose Bay searches for missing woman

The RCMP in Happy Valley-Goose Bay is looking for missing woman Lydia Tuglavina.

Tuglavina was last seen on Friday evening in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

The 58-year-old has black hair and brown eyes. She is four feet 11 inches tall and is 110 pounds.

Police are concerned for her safety and well-being. Anyone with information is asked to call 709-896-3383.

Pitts Memorial Drive Construction ends for the Season

This winter traffic will continue to flow in both directions within the two westbound lanes on the CN Viaduct on Pitts Memorial Drive.

The two eastbound lanes will remain closed. Barriers have been installed to replace the current temporary traffic pylons for the duration of the winter.

All work on the westbound lanes has now been completed. 

Construction will resume this spring and the project should be concluded next summer.

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure reminds motorists that fines for speeding in construction zones range from $100 to $1,500.

MHA calls for Ocean Ranger artifacts to be returned home to the province

The house of assembly debated a motion this week on the Ocean Ranger.  They’re calling for artifacts collected by the royal commission on the disaster to be returned to this province, so they can be used as part of a memorial. ntv’s ben cleary has that story. 

Advocate says permanent tax break needed to fight food insecurity

Come December 14th taxes will be dropped on a number of essential goods. Tt means things like groceries and children’s clothes will be tax free in this holiday season.
